Tuesday morning in Bern-Belp: Federal Councilor Cassis welcomes ambassador Christian Winter who has flown out.

The staff of the Swiss embassy in the Sudanese capital Khartoum were evacuated from the country on Sunday. Ten people were able to leave the African country on the Red Sea with the help of France, and another two with the help of the International Red Cross (ICRC). The Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced this on Monday.

All employees and their families of the Swiss embassy have been expelled from the country. Bloody fighting has been taking place in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for a week now.

Many countries are therefore withdrawing their embassy staff. According to Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief (76), more than 1,000 foreigners have been brought to safety since the start of the evacuation campaign in Sudan. The Spaniard said this on Monday in the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

Arrival at 6.45 am in Bern-Belp

Swiss embassy staff will also return home early Tuesday morning, the FDFA announced Monday evening.

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) meets Swiss Ambassador Christian Winter and his team at Bern-Belp Airport at 6:45 am. After arrival there is a press conference. Blick reports live. (Okay)
