Official Switzerland responds to the threatening gestures of the Russian representation in Switzerland. As the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) confirmed to Blick on Thursday, the Russian ambassador to Switzerland was summoned after giving legal action to a journalist from the “NZZ” over his reporting on Russian aggression against Ukraine endangered in Russia. Text title: “Partisans, Himar and a menacing Ukrainian offensive: Nerves in the ‘terror capital of New Russia’ are on edge”.
“On this occasion, the Russian ambassador was informed that the statements are unacceptable and that this kind of harassment of media workers will not be tolerated,” said a spokesman for the FDFA.
The FDFA reminded Sergei Garmonin that freedom of expression and information, as well as freedom of the media, are guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. Media professionals must be able to carry out their work, which is essential for a functioning democracy, without intimidation and fear.
Swiss laws must be observed
According to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, foreign diplomats are obliged to respect the laws and regulations of the host country, including the constitution, and thus also fundamental rights.
The media union “imprint” condemned in a statement the allegations made by the Russian embassy to the “NZZ” journalist.
Journalist traveled to Ukraine
A few days ago, the Russian embassy in Bern was very upset about a report from a journalist from the Russian-occupied part of the Zaporizhia region. The representative responded with a sharp press release and pointed out “the criminal provisions that could apply to his statements in Russia”. We are talking about a fine or a prison sentence of five to seven years that journalists can expect when they enter Russia.
The case had caused an international uproar. Various media reported on the threatening gestures and the organization “Reporters Without Borders” described the message as “as shocking as it is absurd”. It shows total disregard for press freedom.
