So far, all 23 cantons that have published their state accounts for 2022 have been in the black. The cantons closed more than 4.3 billion francs better than budgeted. Extraordinarily good figures resulted in Zurich and Bern, as well as in both Basel and Geneva.
Martin Mosler of the Institute for Swiss Economic Policy (IWP) at the University of Lucerne is surprised that as many, if not all, of the cantons end up in the red. There were a number of factors beyond the canton’s actions, such as the uncertain geopolitical situation due to the Russian war of aggression or the pressure of the global wave of inflation.
The canton’s finances are currently healthy,” summarizes Ernst Stocker, president of the Conference of Cantonal Financial Directors.
