The former head of communications for federal councilor Alain Berset, Peter Lauener (left), could not be proven to have violated professional secrecy in the so-called crypto affair. The case against him and other suspects was dropped. (archive image)

Peter Marti, special federal prosecutor, announced in a statement on Thursday evening the cessation of the criminal investigation. The rental order is not yet legally binding.

The criminal investigation concerned violation of professional secrecy and incitement to violate professional secrecy. The suspects included Markus Seiler, Secretary General of the Department of State (EDA), and Peter Lauener, the former communications chief of the Department of the Interior (EDI).

The justified initial suspicion that Seiler and Lauener and another suspect from the EDA and a journalist from Tamedia had passed information from the GPDel draft report classified as confidential to the media could not be substantiated despite extensive investigation, Marti wrote.
