National Councilor Gregor Rutz was nominated at the delegates’ meeting in Birmensdorf on Tuesday with 143 of 282 votes. Heer received 136 votes. Three deputies abstained from voting. Rutz, 50, has been a member of the National Council since 2012.
In the discussion, Heer seemed to have the edge. Country council members Mauro Tuena and Roger Köppel, among others, had campaigned for the army. For example, it was emphasized that Heer was popular beyond party boundaries.
In his introduction, Rutz said that he mainly wanted to address voters who recently did not go to the polls.
The Zurich SVP has not had a Council of States since 2007. The last SVP representative in “Stöckli” was Hans Hofmann. Since then, Ueli Maurer, Christoph Blocher, Hans-Ueli Vogt and Roger Köppel have failed in their candidacy.
Leupi, Moser and Sauter also participate
The incumbent Zurich Council of States Ruedi Noser (FDP) will no longer be able to hold out in the autumn. The Liberals want to defend the seat with State Councilor Regine Sauter. State Council Daniël Jositsch (SP) wants to run for a new term.
The Greens nominated Zurich City Councilor Daniel Leupi as a candidate for the Council of States, and GLP National Councilor Tiana Moser. The center has nominated National Councilor Philipp Kutter. He is in the Paraplegic Center Nottwil after a serious skiing accident in early February. He decides in the summer whether to participate. (SDA)
