“Terrorism and violent extremism find fertile ground to spread in the current conflicts and in all kinds of instabilities,” said the SP federal councilor. He commented on the subject in a similar way to a recent report by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. It is “much too easy” for the terrorist groups to recruit members, spread hate speech and incite violence, Berset said.

The Swiss minister called for an end to violence by terrorist groups, given the casualties and the impact on societies. To achieve this, the Federal President emphasized the rule of law, prevention and partnerships. However, counter-terrorist operations should not be used as a pretext for breaking rules, Berset said.

The Swiss Federal President was accompanied by parliamentarians during his visit to New York. Berset was in New York earlier this month. He then attended a meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women and spoke for the first time in the UN Security Council.

Switzerland will be a member of the main political body of the United Nations in 2023 and 2024. In May, Switzerland will chair the Security Council.
