According to the ranking published on Wednesday, 32 university programs in Switzerland are among the top ten in the world. That’s 15 percent of all Swiss university programs – the highest percentage worldwide.
This means that Switzerland is home to six percent of all the top 10 subjects in the world. This share is only surpassed by the US (47 percent) and the UK (27 percent), both of which have significantly more applications. The ranking includes 15,700 subjects and evaluated 1,594 universities from 93 countries.
ETH in top position
In four subjects, Swiss universities are even the best in the world in the QS ranking. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) took first place in three divisions. Earth and marine sciences, geophysics and geology. This places it first more often than any other university in continental Europe.
It ranks third in the world, along with the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. Only the Michigan Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University have more top positions.
The Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne also defended its top position in the university program for the hospitality industry. According to the ranking, Switzerland is a stronghold for hotel management schools – it is home to seven of the world’s top ten.
Employers also have a voice
Switzerland also performs well in dentistry, with two of the top ten dental schools in the world. The University of Bern ranks seventh and the University of Zurich eighth in this area.
ETH Lausanne is also in the top ten of six subjects. These included the two newly added disciplines data science (9th place) and civil engineering (10th place).
The QS ranking is based on four indicators: On the one hand, academics assess the academic reputation of the nominated departments of different universities. On the other hand, employers give an opinion about the graduates.
QS also evaluates how productive the researchers were and how often their studies were cited. Depending on the department, the various indicators are weighted differently.
Of the total number of Swiss higher education programs evaluated, 45 have improved, 68 have decreased and 95 have remained the same. Nine programs were classified for the first time. (SDA)
