Lauber was quoted in an interview that the “Tages-Anzeiger” online portal published Friday night. The papers used by the magazine were forged.
The Gulf Emirate of Qatar was concerned that the 2022 World Cup would be deprived of it due to criticism of the country’s human rights record. Qatar therefore commissioned an American company for intelligence operations last weekend, according to the “NZZ am Sonntag”. The goal: to influence FIFA’s policy by spying on the federal prosecutor’s office.
“Question marks behind the authenticity of the papers”
“There is a fundamental question mark over the authenticity of the papers, which are said to date from December 2011,” Lauber said in an interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”. And: “The alleged author of this corporate presentation has been saying for over a year and a half that these papers are a total forgery.”
A lot of things don’t add up, Lauber said. Because at the end of 2011 he had just been elected federal prosecutor, but not yet in office. No one could have known that a few years later the federal prosecutor’s office would conduct football proceedings or that the meetings in question would take place. “Why would they hire me? Essentially, the logic doesn’t make sense here,” Lauber said.
When Federal Prosecutor Lauber met Fifa President Infantino at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Bern on June 16, 2017, he did so in a room full of bugs, the “NZZ am Sonntag” claimed.
Resignation after criticism
However, Lauber stressed to the “Tages-Anzeiger”: “No attempt was ever made to win me over to anything illegal, neither by Qatar nor by any other state. How and with what should I have been blackmailed?”
Lauber resigned as a federal prosecutor in late August 2020 after, among other things, his conduct in the football complex of proceedings was criticized by the federal criminal court and he also came under political pressure for his closeness to FIFA leadership and alleged memory gaps.
