Division member Peter Merz (54) surprised everyone. Speaking at a general meeting of a bunker club in Bottighofen TG, Merz said the military planned to “occasionally” launch fighter jets to take off and land on the highways. This is what the “St. Gallen newspaper. The aim is “to allow aircraft to take off and land from former military airfields or highways as quickly as possible”.
We are currently looking for locations. The general does not reveal which cities are involved, but he promises: “We will not put towers on the highway.” In order for the highways to actually be used for fighter jets, a case of defense is needed. But the army has to practice for this – for example, the construction of the ramps.
Only in emergencies
But how realistic is such a scenario? At Blick’s request, the military puts it in perspective, writing “that there will be no Air Force exercises on parts of the highway for the foreseeable future.” The scenario described by General Merz does not come entirely out of the blue: “The military has contingency plans so that highways can be used as decentralized locations in defense matters.”
The idea that fighter jets can also land on the street is not new. As early as the late 1950s, parliament approved several runways on the motorways across Switzerland. The Bern-Lausanne motorway was constructed in such a way that it could have served as an emergency landing strip for Payerne VD airport. However, no exercise ever took place there again, and 95 highway airstrips were abandoned in the course of the Army reform. Until now. (brother)
