Pirmin Bischof (centre/SO), chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Council of States (APK-S), informed on Thursday in Bern about the meeting with the Vice-President of the EU Commission, Maros Sefcovic. (Archive)

The meeting discussed, among other things, the role of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in institutional matters. Sefcovic’s statements on this were “very clear and harsh”, namely that the ECJ was “the sole arbiter for EU law”, Bischof said.

What is new is that Sefcovic mentioned exceptions in certain areas and not just safeguard clauses. Because safeguard clauses can be assumed to be temporary. Exceptions, on the other hand, can be “unrestricted exceptions to EU law”. “That’s not entirely unimportant,” Bishop said. Then the ECJ would no longer have jurisdiction in these specific areas.

Sefcovic traveled to Switzerland on Wednesday. He gave a lecture at the University of Friborg and met Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
