The councils have agreed on the final details of the BVG reform. The final vote on the proposal will take place on Friday. (archive image)

Parliament has spent dozens of hours discussing the BVG reform over the past 15 months. In addition, there were lengthy debates in the preparatory advisory committees. Parliament has now passed the latest amendments to the federal law on occupational pensions for old age, survivors and disability. The National Council approved the unification conference proposal by 106 votes in favour, 57 against and 24 abstentions, the Council of States by 32 votes in favour, 7 against and 3 abstentions.

In the eyes of a middle-class majority, this bill is targeted and capable of winning a majority, as heard on several occasions in recent weeks. The left-wing council sees it differently: they have been threatening a referendum for a long time because they see the reform as a “dismantling proposal”.
