New car numbers should come in 2026

This is what the new number plate could theoretically look like. However, there are still no official proposals.

It’s not just a tin plate with numbers. How much the license plate means to some motorists becomes clear when a license plate with a particularly low number is auctioned in a canton. A car owner paid 233,000 francs last year to drive through the country with the number “ZG 10” in the future.

That the Swiss are attached to their license plate is also apparent from the emotional discussion about its refurbishment. It has long been foreseeable that in a few years the large cantons, especially Zurich, will no longer have any number combinations that are still available.

Project starts this year

Now it’s moving forward. “The project to redesign the license plates will start this year,” said the Federal Council at the request of Lucerne FDP national councilor Peter Schilliger (63). The implementation is expected in 2026. What the new license plate will look like is not yet known.

It is the first time that the federal government has issued a concrete timetable. The Federal Road Agency (Astra) announced 15 years ago that it would consider new license plates without the canton coat of arms. This caused a storm of indignation. “I’m proud of my Lucerne number, it’s part of our identity,” then National Councilor Otto Ineichen, like Schilliger a Lucerne liberal, was outraged by “20 minutes”.

At least one number or letter more

Overwhelmed by the strong reactions, the Astra hurried to make it clear that the introduction of a new license plate was only intended for the “medium term”. The subject disappeared back into the drawer.

It only resurfaced ten years later when a group of people from eastern Switzerland announced a popular initiative. They demanded that the country code CH be integrated into the number plates of the vehicles as in other countries and that you no longer need a CH sticker for trips abroad.

The Ausserrhoden Council of States Andrea Caroni (42) took up the case in parliament. Then and Now, the Federal Council announced it would examine this requirement as part of the license plate redesign. There is also the question of whether the Swiss number plates should be aligned with those of the EU. What is certain is that the new license plate will have at least one more number – or letters.
