Who will be the next council member of St. Gallen? Barbara Gysi (SP), Esther Friedli (SVP), Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (FDP) and Franziska Ryser (Greens) are in the running.

According to the interim results, SVP candidate Esther Friedli (45) is clearly leading the interim States elections of St. Gallen. She gets 48.2 percent of the vote. Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (FDP, 56) is far behind with 21.7 percent.

They are followed by Barbara Gysi (SP, 58) with 15.2 percent and Franziska Ryser (Greens, 31) with 14.5 percent of the vote. Individuals account for 0.3 percent. 61 of the 75 municipalities have been counted. Turnout is 40 percent.

The stakes are high for the SVP. She never succeeded in obtaining a seat in the Council of States in the canton of St. Gallen. Among those who have already tried unsuccessfully is Friedli’s life partner, former SVP chairman Toni Brunner (48).

Second vote expected

An opportunity now presents itself for the SVP with the resignation of SP veteran Paul Rechsteiner (70), who is retiring after 36 years in the Federal Palace.

It is expected that there will be a second vote. In this case, the decisive factor will be whether one or more candidates withdraw in order to improve the election chances for their own side. The left could prevent a loss of seats in favor of the SVP by recommending FDP Ms. Vincenz-Stauffacher on the second ballot. From their point of view, that would be the lesser evil. However, it is unlikely that SP candidate Gysi would voluntarily leave the field. (SDA/lha)
