Just eleven days after her re-election, Isabel Garcia (59), the cantonal councilor of the Zurich GLP, defected to the FDP – causing a storm of outrage. In 2008, then CVP cantonal councilor Barbara Keller-Inhelder (54) experienced something similar. She fled two months after her election for the SVP. The case ended up in federal court. He concluded that there was no legal objection to this. The change did not affect Keller-Inhelder’s career: in 2015 she became a member of the National Council.
Maria Rita Marty (60), cantonal councilor of the Zurich EDU, waited just five days after her election in 2019 before switching to the SVP. She also received harsh reactions. EDU canton chairman Hans Egli (58) gave her an ultimatum to resign. Marty stayed – and lost her seat in the election two weeks ago.
Vice versa in Glarus
It is still unclear whether Isabel Garcia will face the voters again. In any case, her ex-party can take comfort in the fact that she unexpectedly received reinforcements in December: in the canton of Glarus, two green district administrators defected to the GLP.
Whether the FDP will be happy with Garcia is anyone’s guess. Thierry Burkart (47), chairman of the national party, welcomed her warmly on Twitter, but immediately removed the tweet.
The FDP was more cautious. Claude Béglé (73) sat for the CVP in the National Council from 2015 to 2019. He then resigned from the party. Last fall, he knocked on the door of the FDP to stand again as a candidate for the National Council under their banner. But the Liberals had the controversial ex-post president rejected.
