The SP found it difficult to find a slogan about the OECD minimum tax. “The SP would have done it very differently,” said Rijksraad member Samuel Bendahan (42) on behalf of the SP presidium during the delegates’ meeting on Saturday. Finally, multinational companies may be taxed. But the resulting 2 billion would rather be returned to the people. “No clear yes or no can be argued,” Bendahan concludes. The party leadership therefore recommended a vote.
However, the representatives of the SP saw it differently and voted in favor of a no. Most speakers supported international coordination of corporate taxation, as defined by the OECD minimum tax. However, the social democrats were annoyed that, in the version adopted by parliament, the extra income would mainly benefit the financially strong cantons. In the end, the result was clear with 240 votes for the no slogan against 112 votes for casting a vote.
Vote June 18
The vote on the two templates will take place on June 18. The aim of the OECD minimum tax is to ensure that internationally active companies in Switzerland with an annual turnover of more than 750 million Swiss francs must pay a minimum of 15 percent profit tax in the future.
The Climate Protection Act is an indirect counter-proposal to the Glacier Initiative, which has been partially withdrawn. Because the SVP held the referendum against the law, the population will comment on it in the summer.
New Vice President
The Social Democratic Party has also elected a new vice president. After Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) was elected to the Bundesrat, her post was filled by Valérie Piller Carrard (44) from Freiburg.
The National Council of Freiburg was unanimously elected as the only candidate in the race. In her speech, the 44-year-old emphasized her rural origins, her professional career and her “common sense”. (lazy/SDA)
