Switzerland adopted EU drone regulations early this year. These contain provisions on flight altitudes and overflights. New safety standards also apply to the manufacture, approval and operation of drones.

Depending on their weight and equipment, drones must be registered with the Federal Bureau of Civil Aviation (Bazl). The announcement of the new rules at the end of November 2022 caused a real rush, a Bazl spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency when asked.

So far, about 10,000 drone operators have registered with the Bazl. In addition, some 10,000 people have taken the exam to obtain the certificate needed to fly drones weighing more than 250 grams.
