By informing the next of kin, they could be relieved and decide in the interest of the deceased if necessary, the BAG writes in a statement on Tuesday. Every person should therefore record their will on an organ donation card, a living will or in the electronic patient file (EPD).
On May 15, 2022, Swiss voters voted for the organ donation opt-out solution. The exact date of the switch is not yet known. Until then, the extended consent solution will continue to apply, whereby organs and tissues can only be removed after death if the person concerned has given consent.
According to Swisstransplant, there were 1,434 people on a waiting list for organ donation in Switzerland at the end of 2021. In the year under review there were 587 transplants. 72 people who were on the waiting list have died.
