A multi-storey residential building is hit by a missile – tanks thunder across the border: brutal images reach us on February 24, many want to help. Caritas collects the first million for Ukraine in three days.
The ICRC also reports record amounts. Migros and Coop donate diapers, toothpaste and tampons. But that was all once. Donations to Unicef and Helvetas have been falling since the summer. It is in line with the general trend in aid organizations.
The private sector is also increasingly turning its back on Ukraine. When asked, Migros writes: The subject does not lend itself to a PR campaign. Interesting: in March this was still the case.
But that is not everything. The food giant says: “Unfortunately, Migros cannot provide what Ukrainians need most.”
Millions of people are currently in dire need: they are at risk of starvation or freezing to death. Migros’ behavior shows that solidarity has cracked. Houses in Ukraine are still shattered when a rocket hits. But it shocks us less. Should the next few days be a celebration of love – or a cliché?
It’s up to us. Let’s help the Ukrainians!
