Taiwan is probably the most attacked target of hybrid warfare worldwide, according to Wu in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers published Saturday. “I know that many European countries, including Switzerland, have suffered from disinformation campaigns and hybrid warfare.”
Taiwan and Switzerland shared the same democratic values and had extensive economic ties. China’s growing influence in the world at the expense of democracies should also concern Switzerland, Wu warned.
“Switzerland has had a policy of neutrality for a long time, so I would like to encourage Switzerland to take a more neutral stance between Taiwan and China instead of fighting on China’s side,” the foreign minister said. “After all, China is a very authoritarian country that threatens other countries. Taking sides with this authoritarian China may not be the best policy for your country.”
Officially, Switzerland sees Taiwan as part of China, as stated on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA): “Switzerland does not recognize Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) as an independent state and thus follows its one-China policy.”
