Basel-Stadt receives Switzerland’s most ambitious climate target

According to the final result, 28,293 votes were received for the counterproposal drafted by the Grand Council, while 15,844 voters voted against. That corresponds to a yes majority of 64.1 percent. The turnout was 43.5 percent, the State Chancellery announced.

The initiative of the left-green circles also obtained a yes majority of 56.7 percent with 25,228 votes against 19,247. It would have set the 2030 target year for net zero emissions. However, on the key question, 25,692 voters (61.9 percent) ticked the counter-proposal, while 15,848 (38.2 percent) favored the initiative.

With the acceptance of the counter-proposal, the canton of Basel-Stadt has taken on a clear pioneering role in climate policy throughout Switzerland. At the federal level, by setting the target year of 2050, the federal councils ensured that the federal glacier initiative was withdrawn. The referendum of the SVP against the law is still pending.
