Cantonal health directors define rehabilitation

For the first time in Switzerland, there is a recommendation for a uniform understanding of the term rehabilitation in the health sector.

For the first time in Switzerland, there is a recommendation for a uniform understanding of the term rehabilitation in the health sector. This was developed by the Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (GDK) at a plenary session in Bern.

As the GDK announced on Friday, the recommendation is based on a definition from the World Health Organization (WHO). Accordingly, the cantons should understand rehabilitation as a set of measures aimed at improving the ability of a person with health impairments to cope with their environment and alleviating their disability in daily life.

Simply put, it is about helping people to organize their daily lives as independently as possible.

Recommendations for quality requirements for rehabilitation

The GDK has also issued a recommendation for a uniform planning system in rehabilitation. In this, the GDK defines, for example, what types of rehabilitation there should be – from neurological rehabilitation to geriatric rehabilitation.

With a third recommendation, the GDK aims to standardize the quality requirements of the cantons for rehabilitation clinics and departments.

Basic uniform for the first time

According to the GDK, these recommendations will close a gap in Switzerland. For the first time, the cantons have uniform bases and classifications that they can use in their cantonal hospital planning in terms of rehabilitation, GDK president Lukas Engelberger said, according to the announcement.

The cantons thus laid a further foundation for more inter-cantonal coordination of hospital planning.
