Evi Allemann (44) from Bern wants to become a member of the federal council. That is what she says in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers. “I have thought about it carefully and had many conversations – in my personal environment, but also with the party,” says Allemann. She also spoke with Flavia Wasserfallen (43), who does not want to participate.
She did not make a conscious choice, continues Allemann. “It came slowly. I had to sleep on it several times and at a certain point I felt: I’m ready.”
Youngest cantonal parliamentarian in Switzerland
At the age of 44, Evi Allemann can already look back on more than two decades in politics. The Social Democrat is a fixture in Bernese politics, whether as a busy parliamentarian or as a government councilor.
Evi Allemann first made headlines in April 1998 in the Bernese parliamentary elections. At the age of 19, she was elected the youngest member of the cantonal parliament in Switzerland.
In the Berne Grand Council she was mainly concerned with youth and education issues. She was also a member of the Judiciary Commission. This went well with her law degree at the University of Bern, which she completed in 2003.
In the same year, Allemann was elected a member of the National Council, of which she was a member until 2018. In public, she was primarily seen as a traffic and safety politician. During her time on the National Council, Evi Allemann was president of the VCS Switzerland and served on the board of the Swiss Tenants Association.
Her career in the National Council came to an end in 2018 due to an internal party term limit. But Allemann was able to continue her political career seamlessly: she was elected to the governing council of Bern, succeeding Barbara Egger.
As a member of the government council, Allemann heads the Interior and Justice Department. She lives in Bern and is the mother of two children aged eleven and seven. (zis/SDA)
