Federal Council examines the construction of gas storage facilities in Switzerland

Gas storage facilities in Germany: The Federal Council is investigating the construction of such facilities in Switzerland.

The Federal Council took note of a report on the construction of domestic gas storage facilities on Wednesday. The paper shows that seasonal storage options for natural gas, biogas or hydrogen can serve to ensure security of supply, the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) announced.

The Federal Council now wants to clarify the legal and financial framework for the construction of gas storage facilities in Germany. The Economic Department (EAER) and the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) Department are expected to present results by the end of April 2023. Industry should also be involved.

For the Federal Council, the focus is on seasonal storage, especially underground. Experience shows that the construction of such systems takes between five and ten years from decision to implementation.

Electrification and energy-saving measures will significantly reduce the share of natural gas in Swiss energy consumption by 2050, the SFOE writes. But gas remains important for the industry. In the future, this demand will mainly be met with biogas, hydrogen and natural gas. Storage options are therefore important. (SDA)
