Vaud councilors are not running for Sommaruga’s successor

The Council of States Rebecca Ruiz …

The Vaud health director Rebecca Ruiz (40) said on Saturday that she wanted to focus on her position as health director. She is honored to have been considered as a possible candidate to succeed Sommaruga, she says. But after some thought, she decided not to run for office.

She is convinced that the SP has high-quality personalities to succeed Sommaruga. She herself currently wants to concentrate on the mandate as councilor of state, which the inhabitants of Vaud had entrusted to her in the spring. Ruiz was elected State Councilor of Vaud in March 2019 and was confirmed in office in April 2022. Before that, she was a member of the National Council from 2014 onwards.

recognition for work

The Walloon state councilor Nuria Gorrite (52) also has no ambitions from the Federal Council. The residents of Vaud can continue to count on their commitment to the Council of State, Gorrite said in a statement.

She is honored that her candidacy for the Federal Council has been considered by others. She sees this as recognition for the work she has done for ten years in the Vaud State Council. Still, she decided not to run for office, the Vaud resident said.

Gorrite was elected to the cantonal council of Vaud in 2007 and in 2012 after a second attempt. From 2017 to the spring of this year, she headed the canton of Vaud as the first woman to hold this position. She is currently head of the Infrastructure, Culture and Human Resources department.
