Whether in Bern, Zurich, Geneva or Lausanne VD – climate activists have been straining the nerves of car and truck drivers for weeks. They stick to roads and block traffic.
The protest actions of the organization Renovate Switzerland have already led to dangerous situations because angry motorists sometimes try to break through the blockades. In Germany, self-adhesive blocks have already delayed rescue operations, for example in the case of an accident cyclist who is still in life-threatening condition. “It’s a climate fight, not a climate hug,” a German activist sneered on Twitter – for which he has since apologized.
SVP National Councilor Mauro Tuena (50, ZH) bursts out in this statement. “People like that have no respect for other people’s lives,” he tells Blick. The SVP does not accept that just with a shrug. “We want to prevent such a case from happening here.”
Bavaria as a role model
That is why the party is now demanding a crackdown on glue activists and road blockers. “These chaotic people prevent working people from commuting. And even the ambulances can’t get through,” Tuena raves.
The SVP now presents a list of requirements that everything has. Sharp fines must be imposed for glue activists and prison terms for repeat offenders. The latter must be able to “detain for several days” without conviction by the police, “to prevent the imminent inspection or continuation of an administrative offense or criminal offense important to the general public”.
The SVP mentions Bavaria as a role model. “It cannot be that the chaotic people have to go to the station and after a few hours are free again and block the next road,” complains Tuena.
There are legal bases
The blockers would also have to pay compensation to the disabled companies and professionals. “I call on the injured to, in addition to reporting coercion, also report their shortcomings under civil law,” said Tuena. The police, in turn, should be given immediate powers to remove roadblocks.
And finally, judges who do not punish the crimes of the protesters should be suspended. The SVP is angry at a Zurich district judge who announced that in future all climate activists would be acquitted across the board and without investigating the individual case.
“The climate activists joke about our lax system,” Tuena is annoyed. “This must come to an end.” The legal bases are largely in place, but must now be exploited. The SVP also wants their demands to be weighed in parliament. Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (58) has to explain what she thinks of the blockades during question time of the National Council.
