Arib leaves the House of Representatives without saying goodbye

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and PvdA member Khadija Arib leaves the House of Representatives without saying goodbye. She doesn’t write a suicide note and doesn’t come into the house to say goodbye, she confirms after De Telegraaf’s reporting. She sends an email.

Arib was in the House of Representatives for 24 years. She was Chair from 2016 to 2021. In late September, it was leaked that the House Executive Committee (the Presidency) was investigating Arib for transgressive behavior during her presidency.

The Presidency had received two anonymous letters. This showed that there may have been “a very unsafe working environment” for civil servants under Arib. She is said to have abused her position and put people down.

‘Nothing to add

Arib reacted angrily. In early October, she announced her departure. “I issued a statement on the reasons for my departure on October 1 and have nothing to add,” she told the ANP news agency.

The deputy then wrote that he did not agree with the decision to launch an external investigation. Arib said in the letter that the board had done great harm to the House of Representatives, the democratic process, and Arib himself, among other things.

PvdA party leader Kuiken wrote that he was “totally surprised” by Arib’s decision to resign. “That hurts me personally and the PvdA group as a whole,” said the social democratic politician at the time.
