The new SP councilor Beat Jans (59) surprised friend and foe with a blow: as soon as he took office, he announced a tougher approach to asylum. He wants to take tougher action against criminal asylum seekers throughout Switzerland and reduce the number of hopeless asylum applications. “It is not left-wing politics to turn a blind eye to problems,” he made clear during a visit to Ticino in February. A clear message to his comrades, who wrinkled their noses in irritation.
Jans has planned another big performance on Tuesday: “100 days in office.” Although it has only been exactly 93 days, he took stock of his first three months as a federal councilor at a media conference. But not only a retrospective is planned, Jans is also looking ‘forward’, as he announced at X. With a categorical statement: “No means no!” He is probably referring to his asylum process.
More Ukrainian women should work
But Jans is also challenged in other ways on the refugee front. Currently, approximately 65,000 Ukrainians with protection status S live in Switzerland. And he inherited an ambitious target from his predecessor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (60): by the end of the year, the labor participation rate among Ukrainians should rise to 40 percent. The labor force participation rate currently stands at 23.6 percent.
Jans has not yet answered the question of how this goal should be achieved in concrete terms. It is quite possible that he will put his suggestions on the table during his annual media conference.
Jans under pressure to save money
This is all the more urgent because the Ministry of Justice is also under pressure to save money, as the asylum sector costs billions annually. And more than 1 billion francs has also been budgeted for Ukrainian refugees. That is why Jans has asked his colleagues at the Federal Council to present a package of measures to reduce costs in these areas by the end of April.
