Ruag’s series of accidents has one more episode. The weapons company is charged with maintaining 30 F/A-18 aircraft for the federal government. But the state-owned company is apparently overwhelmed by this.

The structural renovation program will only be completed on 15 of the 30 aircraft. “The work on the aircraft structure is taking more time than initially planned,” the federal authority Armasuisse said. Ruag emphasizes: “The technically demanding work is more complex than expected. “In addition, maintenance costs increase as aircraft age.”

What happens to the 15 aircraft that are not completely overhauled? “Parts of the structural remediation program will be replaced by additional inspections during future periodic maintenance. All 30 aircraft can be used for all orders,” said Armasuisse.

The Federal Council is also dissatisfied with Ruag in other areas because it repeatedly produces negative headlines: “The financial result has improved compared to the previous year, but still falls short of the owner’s expectations,” says the VBS. Although the arms industry is booming as a result of the war in Ukraine, Ruag’s net profit fell: at 20 million francs it was below last year’s 27 million francs.

In any case, Ruag does not do its major business with its core competence, but with real estate projects. Although real estate led to good results, operational matters with external customers “did not meet the owner’s expectations”, according to the VBS.

Put an end to ‘unprofitable old companies’.

The Federal Council demands that Ruag concentrate on its core activities. The ‘unprofitable old companies’ should come to an end.

Ruag’s chairman Nicolas Perrin (65) had already announced in advance that he would step down. Due to various scandals, he had increasingly become a burden for VBS boss Viola Amherd (61). The fact that Perrin is the brother-in-law of Amherd’s personal employee Brigitte Hauser-Süess (69) was discussed in Federal Bern.

Perrin’s successor was advertised this week. Two details irritate Ruag insiders: the new “presidential person” does not need to speak English or know the Swiss military.
