Current SVP Councilor of Parliament Esther Friedli told in a radio program with whom she opened her shared apartment after her election.

In the Bundestag you would call it an “unholy alliance”: SP and SVP happily united! Not so on the streets of Bern, where the paths of politicians of different stripes inevitably cross. This also applies to that of an SVP trio with an SP duo.

After the 2019 elections, then National and current councilor Esther Friedli (46, SG), her life partner Toni Brunner (49) and the newly elected National Councilor Monika Rüegger (56, OW) were out together after a party evening when they – ‘after midnight’, as Friedli says in the SRF radio program ‘Personal’ – met then SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51) and Christian Levrat (53), who was still the SP boss.

«Tony! Show!”

«Tony! Toni!’ Berset had shouted when he saw the former SVP boss. The quintet then moved to a bar to chat, but closed its doors “at some point,” as Friedli recalls. And she adds with a smile: “All that was left was our shared apartment, which was not well furnished at all – and we had nothing to drink.” You should know: Friedli and Rüegger have been sharing an apartment since their election – a “super shared apartment”, according to the St. Gallen resident.

But back to that wet and happy evening. The then Minister of Health quickly resolved the alcohol shortage in the shared apartment. “It’s not a problem at all,” Berset reported. Friedli: “He swarmed out and came back fully loaded after 10 minutes.” The inauguration of the new shared apartment was therefore a success.

An episode that to a certain extent symbolizes Swiss politics for Friedli. “On the surface you fight against each other and stand up for your own ideas, but off the slopes you can have a beer with each other across party lines – or as a couple.” (Russian)
