In the canton of Basel-Stadt, cannabis is already sold in pharmacies as part of a pilot test. Now there will be another attempt in Zurich.

Smoking weed on behalf of science. The largest cannabis pilot test in Switzerland to date will take place in Zurich in the coming years. 5,000 test subjects are being sought for this. From May you can legally buy organic cannabis at special pharmacies and pharmacies in the canton of Zurich.

It is hoped the study will give new impetus to cannabis research and regulation, says the Swiss Cannabis Research Association, which is behind the study approved by the Federal Office of Public Health. The association conducts the research together with researchers from the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich Economic Research Center KOF.

The seventh pilot test

The pilot test is designed for a duration of five years. The researchers compare the data of the 5,000 people who are legally allowed to smoke weed in the context of the study with that of 2,500 regular stoners. The focus of the research is on the economic and social consequences of cannabis legalization, says Paul-Lukas Good, president of the Swiss Cannabis Research Association. The corporate lawyer founded the association in 2021, which is funded by donations. He plans similar experiments in other cities.

Since 2021, the so-called ‘experimental article’ allows pilot tests to be conducted where cannabis is provided for non-medical purposes. There are currently seven projects underway – including in Basel, Zurich, Lucerne and Biel. They are intended to provide a scientific basis for the discussion about the legalization of cannabis.
