In November, Donald Trump (77) could be elected American president for the second time. But what does that mean for Switzerland? The Federal Council has apparently also thought about this, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”. During at least one meeting in February, the committee discussed a second term for Trump.
The State Department then issued an informal order clarifying what a new Trump election would mean for Switzerland. The newspaper is based on its own research. The Federal Council does not want to comment on the matter to the newspaper. “If the Federal Council has something to communicate, it does so actively,” writes government spokesman André Simonazzi.
Good for the economy, bad for safety?
However, there are signs beyond politics. Martin Naville, the CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce Amcham, told the newspaper that Swiss politicians had a good relationship with the Trump administration during its first term. “It can also be said on a psychological level: Donald Trump loves Switzerland.”
However, there are safety concerns. Army Chief Thomas Süssli recently outlined a scenario at the delegate meeting of the officers’ association that comes from NATO circles, as CH Media newspapers report. After Trump’s election, he could cut off support to Europe and Ukraine, allow Russia to win the war and then use hybrid attacks against a Baltic country to test how strong the NATO alliance still is. But: “No one comes to help,” says Süssli. Many European countries have too few troops.
Of course, these are just scenarios. But preparations for a possible second term for Donald Trump have also begun in Switzerland. (brother)
