The voters’ verdict on the 13th AHV pension was clearly yes with 58.2 percent. Let’s be clear: the bonus must be paid out from 2026.
However, it is unclear which payment method should apply. It is still unclear whether the supplementary pension will be paid out at the end of the year – as in Liechtenstein, for example, as a “Christmas bonus”. Or that the old-age pension should be distributed proportionally over the year and increased by 8.33 percent per month, as Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (60) said in Question Time at the National Council.
SVP-Stark insists on a one-time payment
The administration is toying with a monthly increase, which would mean less administrative hassle. But now Thurgau SVP State Councilor Jakob Stark (65) insists that the allowance be paid out once a year. Exactly as this was explained two years ago in the message from the Federal Council.
In a motion, Stark now calls for the 13th AHV pension to be paid out “once a year in November or December”. He refers to the voting book, which states that the pension must be transferred on the basis of the 13th monthly salary that many employees receive.
De Thurgauer wants to prevent the supplement from being absorbed into a monthly pension increase. Because just like a 13th monthly salary, the 13th AHV pension also represents ‘something special’ that goes beyond just a wage or pension increase: ‘The recognition of an achievement, a special benefit towards the end of the year, that brings joy and new material spreads perspectives must open up.”
Maillard wants the contract as early as 2025
A demand that was received with open ears by the winner of the vote, Pierre-Yves Maillard (55). The union boss and the SP Council of States agree to an annual one-off payment, as Stark demands. With one small difference: “We demand that the Federal Council introduce the 13th AHV pension as early as December 2025.”
