Federal Council issues orders: more women and the elderly must work

The Federal Council wants to further improve the situation, especially for women and older workers.

This is evident from the general plan to promote the domestic labor potential of the federal government, cantons and social partners, which the Federal Council approved on Friday. The report takes a first look at the so-called national priority. In doing so, Parliament implemented the SVP’s mass immigration initiative, which was accepted by the people and the cantons in mid-2018.

One of the measures taken in this context is the job registration obligation for professions with high unemployment. In May 2019, the Federal Council also approved a package of measures aimed at ensuring the competitiveness of the domestic workforce and strengthening social security for older unemployed people.

According to the Federal Council, the results of the report show that labor market indicators have developed positively in recent years. The existing measures have made an important contribution to promoting and utilizing the domestic labor potential.

However, the state government wants to further promote this potential. There is a need for action on labor market participation, especially for two target groups: on the one hand, women, for example women returning to work or women who have emigrated to join their families, and on the other hand older workers, especially long-term unemployed people with specific needs.

The Federal Council issued several orders based on the report. The Ministry of Economic Affairs should set specific priorities to better utilize the potential of women and older workers in the areas of the labor market and education. The Federal Council also instructed the Ministry of Justice to provide greater support to well-qualified people joining their families in the recognition of professional qualifications and in professional integration.
