Shot across the bow: the Council of States will probably scuttle the tonnage tax for ships

Swiss companies operate more than 3,600 ships on the world’s oceans.

The small chamber followed the request of the majority of its Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxes (WAK-S) with 29 votes in favor and 15 against, without abstentions. This criticized that the financial consequences of the project were unclear and that its constitutionality was questionable.

Now it is once again the turn of the National Council. He accepted the proposal during the winter session of 2022. If he agrees with the decision to not join, it is off the table. The same applies if the Grand Chamber continues to adhere to its position, but the Council of States subsequently refuses for the second time to act on the new federal law.

With the introduction of the tonnage tax, companies active in shipping could choose to no longer pay profit tax for individual ships, but instead pay flat rates for the carrying capacity. This would make the average tax burden for companies lighter than is currently the case. (SDA)
