Inflation does not stop at the Federal Council either. The government members could expect a significant pay increase this year: almost 5,000 francs were added. This meant that the annual salary of the Federal Council rose to more than 470,000 francs. Last year the inflation adjustment was even more intense: 2.5 percent: no less than 11,421 francs were added. For some Büezers this corresponds to two months’ wages.

Parliament is responsible for the generous salary increase. In the Regulation of the Federal Assembly on salaries and occupational pensions for magistrates, the national and state councils provided that the Federal Council automatically receives the same cost of living allowance as federal staff. In negotiations with the employee associations, the Federal Council ultimately determines which percentage applies to the employees – and therefore also to themselves.

Magisterial privileges

A circumstance that angers SVP national councilor David Zuberbühler (45, AR). “It cannot be the case that the Federal Council can decide on an adjustment to the cost of living for staff and then benefit from it itself.”

Many people are struggling to pay their bills due to the rising cost of living and have less and less money in their accounts, he laments. “While people living at the limit have to spend every franc, the members of the Federal Council receive significant inflation compensation. Nobody understands that.”

‘Zubi’, as the Ausserrhoden are called in the Federal Palace, refers to even more magisterial privileges: from a lump sum expense allowance of 30,000 francs to personal company vehicles, to a first-class GA travel card or a subscription to the Swiss cable cars. A total package, so to speak.

Cancellation from 2025

Reason enough for the residents of Ausserrhoden to try out the wide range of services. With a parliamentary initiative, he is therefore calling on the Federal Council to abolish the automatic inflation adjustment from 2025.

“The salary would remain at the current level of around 470,000 francs – that is still more than enough,” he thinks. “The cancellation would be a clear sign that we take the financial concerns of the people in our country seriously.”
