The building is Haus Diamant, the State Chancellery announced on Friday. The municipal retirement center operator Viva Lucerne wants to build apartments for the elderly here in the medium term.
According to the announcement, the canton can temporarily use Haus Diamant from April 2024. The first refugees are expected to move in there in May after structural adjustments. This should concern people in the regular asylum procedure, but also people seeking protection from Ukraine.
To ensure “good coexistence” between the elderly center and the asylum accommodation, a guiding group is created. From 2012 to 2016, refugees were housed in the Eichhof civil protection facility and therefore in the immediate vicinity of the elderly center.
Despite the new transit center, the canton of Lucerne says it needs to create additional accommodation for refugees. (SDA)
