“It is time for civil society, religion and politics to unite against hate speech and violence. Let us fight together for a better future in which tolerance, respect and peace prevail.” With this statement, politicians from Zurich appealed to the public on Tuesday evening. The background to the call is the brutal knife attack by a 15-year-old teenager on a Jew.
The call is based on an initiative of the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism (GRA). The weekend’s “brutal event” must not “further fuel the spiral of racist agitation and violence.” The attack should be seen as a turning point and a wake-up call, the report said.
Mauch and Fehr also signed
The statement was signed, among others, by District President Mario Fehr (65), City President Corine Mauch (63), Councilor for Justice Jacqueline Fehr (60), the President of the Swiss Association of Jewish Communities (SIG) Ralph Lewin and Abduselam. Halilovic, President of the Association of Islamic Organizations in Zurich, the President of the Church Council of the Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich Esther Straub and the President of the Synodal Council of the Catholic Church of the Canton of Zurich Raphael J.-P. Meijer.
A 15-year-old Swiss-Tunisian who claimed support for the Islamic State (IS) terrorist network in an Arabic-language video has now been arrested for suspected stabbing. He was naturalized in 2011. (SDA)
