The cash cow Zurich is standing on its hind legs: financial director Ernst Stocker (SVP) criticizes that other cantons do not pay enough for Zurich’s services. (archive image)

“Everyone benefits from the services that the Canton of Zurich offers, including low-tax cantons such as Schwyz and Zug,” Stocker told the media. These services are reimbursed for, for example, education, the prison system or culture, but in no way cover the costs.

According to the calculations, the Canton of Zurich will bear uncovered costs of approximately 104 million francs. This corresponds to 1.5 cantonal tax percentage. Zurich will bear these costs on top of the 462 million the canton pays in financial equalization (NFA).

“The situation has been unsatisfactory for a long time,” Stocker said. Zurich is the cash cow for everyone. He now wants to involve other central tax cantons, such as Basel-Stadt, St. Gall or Geneva, and work on a new tax equalization.
