The fear of a relapse and concerns about violence and discrimination are clearly noticeable, said research director Gaé Colussi of the Pink Cross in a press release on Thursday.

The research shows what role a community plays for gay, bisexual and queer men, wrote aid organization Roze Kruis. There is still a sense of connection, which is mainly expressed in mutual understanding. But the community is far from uniform. It offers space for support and friendships in which you can more easily be yourself.

Different types of relationships

The gay community has a variety of relationship forms, with open and exclusive relationships or even polyamorous constellations, the report said. These forms were satisfactory to the respondents and led to great satisfaction. However, this diversity is currently not legally recognized or protected, says Florian Vock, board member of Roze Kruis.

The survey was launched on the occasion of Roze Kruis’s 30th anniversary in 2023. Nearly 1,500 gay, bisexual and queer men took part in the survey. This makes the study one of the largest studies in Switzerland among this target group. In particular, queer men’s relationship with the community, their relationships and friendships, and their expectations for the future were explored.

The English abbreviation LGBTIQ* stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people. The asterisk is a placeholder for other identities and genders.
