Anyone who committed murder as a teenager could in future be taken into custody in Switzerland. After the Council of States, the National Council also approved in principle the adjustments to the Youth Criminal Justice Act on Wednesday, with 130 votes to 61, against the wishes of the SP and the Greens.

Young people who committed murder as minors after the age of 16 should be able to be locked up. After the juvenile sanction ends, there must be a serious risk that they will commit such a crime again.

Twelve teenage murderers in ten years

It is not the 16 or 17 year olds who should be taken into custody, but the young murderers after they turn 18 from juvenile justice. According to the Federal Council, twelve young people were convicted of murder in Switzerland between 2010 and 2020. Some of them had to apply for benefits after serving their sentences.

The bill goes back to the Council of States. (SDA)
