EDA’s ‘Travel Admin’ app can help with emergency situations abroad. What can the latest version 3.0 do?

The Swiss make more than 16 million trips abroad every year and can encounter all kinds of dangers along the way. Whether it concerns violent conflicts or natural disasters: the new version of the ‘Travel Admin’ app from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (EDA) is intended to provide assistance in emergency situations.

The app is free and “easier than ever to use,” the EDA says. But what does travel assistance actually offer? Blick did the checking.

Travel preparation made easy

Ride tracking is now easier. In addition, which is useful for families and groups, you can add fellow travelers to trips. The EDA app can even provide packing support. It provides a checklist for important documents and travel preparations. For example, it draws attention to checking the necessary vaccinations, informing about local laws and customs and, if necessary, increasing the credit card limit.

The app also provides an overview of the security situation in more than 170 countries. It identifies possible risks and recommends appropriate precautions. For example, she advises against tourist and non-urgent trips to Israel. Or draw attention to minefields near the Greek border during a trip to Turkey.

Self-help is still paramount

If, despite good preparation, it becomes dangerous, the app serves as an aid. For example, in the event of a natural disaster, the FDFA would be aware of the location of travelers and could directly communicate self-help information.

The addresses and contact details of the nearest Swiss representation are also listed on the app and the emergency numbers of the travel destination can be accessed at the touch of a finger. For solo travelers, sharing your location with your contacts can be particularly useful. In addition to the TCS, Rega is also a new partner of the EDA and can be reached directly via the app.

But be careful: despite help via the app, the federal government does not immediately step into the breach in emergency situations. As part of consular protection, he only comes to help once those affected have done everything they can to get out of the trouble.

The app has already been used here

Since its launch in 2019, the app has proven itself several times: “For example, when organizing the return journey of blocked Swiss travelers in connection with the corona pandemic,” says Léa Zürcher, media spokesperson for the FDFA.

The EDA app also came to the aid of Swiss travelers during the earthquake in Turkey a year ago and the political unrest in Sudan last spring. Last October, blocked Swiss travelers in the Middle East were informed of free flights to travel back to Switzerland. (zac)
