Police officers in public transport must be able to upgrade. The decision in the National Council was taken on Monday with 132 votes in favor and 60 against, with one abstention. The proposal now goes to the Council of States.

Since 2008, many police forces have purchased such electroshock weapons, argued SVP national councilor Michaël Buffat. These can also be an important tool for the transport police, for example in the event of threats with knives – especially when there are many people in one place.

The Federal Council wants to investigate its meaning and purpose

The Federal Council recommended accepting the motion. Transport Minister Albert Rösti made it clear that the initiative was interpreted as an investigation order. Which devices are suitable for which situations and when their use is appropriate should first be clarified.

The transport police do not have the same role as the cantonal police force, criticized Fabien Fivaz (Greens/NE). It is politically desirable for her to have fewer competencies. Fivaz also pointed out that the so-called Tasers were anything but a harmless weapon. Hundreds of deaths have been documented from its use, many in the US. In addition, the transport police already have sufficient resources to carry out their tasks, such as firearms and pepper spray. (SDA)
