Ignazio Cassis will give two speeches on Friday.

It has been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. Federal councilor Ignazio Cassis (62) will give two speeches at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday. One for the General Assembly and one for the UN Security Council, on which Switzerland has had a seat since January 2023.

Cassis is expected to comment on several current issues related to the war, such as humanitarian demining. On Thursday he described clearing mines as a huge task. The consequences of mining and the contamination of the country by the remnants of war reached far beyond the borders of Ukraine.

In addition, the Foreign Minister will probably promote the peace conference that Switzerland promised to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky (45) during his visit to Bern. After the big announcements in January, the organization has been running rather slowly so far, as the “Tages-Anzeiger” recently reported. There are no binding commitments from major countries such as the US or China.

Cassis is expected to deliver the speech during the debate around 4:30 p.m. Blick reports live in the stream. (brother)
