SP Minister of Justice Beat Jans (59) plans to tighten the asylum area. He specifically focuses on those who have no chance of asylum. And: He wants to tackle criminal asylum seekers harder. That is why the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) also plans to open a special center for stubborn asylum seekers. So far, no suitable facility has been found in German-speaking Switzerland.
This is evident from the Federal Council’s response to an interpellation by FDP Council of States Damian Müller (39, LU), which was published on Thursday. According to several media reports, he asked what the federal government is doing against criminal asylum seekers.
Last year 108 people
There is currently a special federal asylum center in Les Verrières in the canton of Neuchâtel. According to information from the Federal Council, 108 people were assigned to the center last year. An average of seven people were accommodated in Les Verrières – with a capacity of ten places. Most people came from the Maghreb.
Due to the low capacity in the special center, persistent asylum seekers were also transferred between federal asylum centers within the Ticino asylum region and Central Switzerland, the state government wrote.
Seven times more expensive than normal federal asylum centers
The special asylum center Les Verrières is a very small asylum center with increased security requirements. According to the Federal Council, annual operating costs per bed are approximately seven times higher than in regular federal asylum centers. In return, security and coexistence in the other federal asylum centers would be improved.
This week, the new Minister of Justice Jans announced stricter measures against criminal asylum seekers. He called on the authorities to make full use of all criminal justice options in such cases. Measures such as administrative detention or deportation detention are applied too rarely these days – even though these places are only about half full. (SDA)
