There is a lot of noise about noise in the city of Zurich. To protect residents from too much noise, the city wants to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h on Rosengartenstrasse and Bucheggstrasse. But the cantonal police don’t want that. The judge will probably have to decide.
Until now, cities are allowed to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h on main roads. In Freiburg, for example, this already applies to 60 percent of the surface area. But the transport politicians in parliament want to stop this, as the “Tages-Anzeiger” reports. Lucerne FDP Landraad member Peter Schilliger (64) has submitted a proposal for this.
“In a chaotic way”
“Currently, the speed limit in urban areas of 30 km/h is spreading chaotically in many cities and towns, including on traffic-oriented streets,” the proposal said. The different types of streets must retain their functions. In general, 50 km/h zones should be allowed on main roads, while 30 km/h zones should remain possible on local streets. For example, if there is a main street in front of a school, exceptions should be possible.
But there is criticism of the proposal, especially from cities and municipalities. For example, last year the city association and city traffic controllers generally demanded a speed limit of 30 km/h.
Decision in March
“We don’t want communities to be forced into a corset,” Christoph Niederberger (53), director of the Swiss Association of Municipalities, told the “Tages-Anzeiger”. Speed 30 is an accepted reality. The association of cities does not want to limit the options for action. “Cities and municipalities know the local conditions in their area and the needs of their population best,” says President Anders Stokholm (56).
The Council of States will decide on the initiative in March. The transport politicians in the committee already agree, as did the National Council in the autumn. There is a good chance that the Council of States will follow this example. (brother)
