Police forces leave a building. Police searched several buildings during a large-scale raid against smugglers.

German federal police searched properties in four states in a major raid against members of a smuggling gang. As a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced upon request, the operation included the execution of several European arrest warrants on Wednesday morning in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein.

Police authorities in France and Belgium were also said to be involved. The suspects are said to have been involved in smuggling across the English Channel. The focus is on North Rhine-Westphalia.

Hundreds of officers on duty

A spokesperson for the federal police in North Rhine-Westphalia confirmed the large-scale operation, coordinated by Europol, to the German news agency. This is to combat smuggling crime and the unauthorized entry of migrants into Britain by boat across the English Channel. The federal police did not want to comment on the number of people arrested because the operation is still ongoing. About 700 emergency services were involved in the raid and searches at more than twenty locations in North Rhine-Westphalia. Europol will make the final assessment on Thursday, the spokesperson said.

The European Union Police Authority confirmed that it involved an operation in several European countries. Details about the operation would not be announced until the afternoon, a spokeswoman in The Hague said. (SDA)
