The vote on March 3 will be a voting thriller! The race for the trade union federation’s initiative for a 13th AHV pension is creating excitement. The referendum has lost ground among voters, but the yes camp is still slightly ahead.

53 percent of voters still think the introduction of a 13th monthly wage for pensioners is a good idea. 8 percent less than a month ago. This is the result of the second voting survey that GFS Bern conducted on behalf of SRG. However, the share that says no increased by 7 to 43 percent. The share of undecided people is a paltry 4 percent.

Approval is highest among the SP (83 percent) and the Greens (72 percent). However, among ordinary people, enthusiasm is waning. While the SVP and the Center had a yes majority in the first survey, now 46 percent of SVP supporters say yes and 53 percent say no. In the middle it is 44 to 54.

The no trend among FDP sympathizers has increased from 72 percent no to 26 percent yes. Among the GLP, 62 percent want to vote against and 32 percent in favor of the initiative.

What the supporters should be happy with, however, is that more than two-thirds of parties not affiliated with a party are in favor of the initiative.

Open race for more stands

There is also movement among the age groups: the majority of 18 to 39 year olds now reject the initiative, while those over 40 still clearly agree with the 13th AHV pension. In terms of gender, the initiative is slightly better received by men (54 percent are in favor) than by women (52 percent agree). Four weeks ago this was exactly the other way around.

The differences between the language areas are interesting: approval is still highest in Ticino with 79 percent, followed by French-speaking Switzerland with 69 percent. In German-speaking Switzerland, however, this is only 48 percent – compared to 49 percent no.

The majority of states could thus become the deciding factor in the voting mystery. 12 of the 23 stands are required. The research currently shows a yes trend in ten states and a no trend in eight states. The race is open in five cantons: Zurich, Graubünden, Lucerne, Schaffhausen and Glarus.

Pension initiative with a large backlog

While the supporters of the 13th AHV pension can still hope for a vote victory, the friends of the young liberal pension initiative are losing their skin. While 41 percent of respondents in the first survey were in favor of a higher retirement age, this is now only 35 percent. 63 percent reject the request, the rest have not yet made a decision.

The Young Liberals propose automatism. First, the retirement age must gradually increase from 65 to 66 years in 2033, and then be linked to life expectancy: for each additional month of life expectancy, it must increase by 0.8 months – to 67, 68 or more.

Liberal yes wobbles

Among FDP supporters, a yes is no longer even certain: only half want to agree, just under half say no.

However, the No share dominates among the other parties. Strongest among SP supporters with 80 percent rejection, least among GLP supporters with 51 percent no. Rejection among SVP supporters has also increased significantly, from 51 to 61 percent no – even though the national party has expressed the yes slogan.

That is what the AHV initiatives are all about

There will be a pension showdown at the ballot box on March 3. The voters will then decide on two AHV initiatives: on the one hand, on the popular initiative of the trade unions for a 13th AHV pension. On the other hand, about the pension initiative of the Young Liberals.

The trade unions’ popular initiative “for a better life in old age” calls for the introduction of a 13th AHV pension. If the answer is yes, a thirteenth monthly salary for seniors will be added to the previous twelve monthly pensions.

The Young Liberals’ pension initiative aims to increase the retirement age. First, it should gradually increase from 65 to 66 years by 2033 and then be linked to life expectancy: per month of additional life expectancy it should increase by 0.8 months – to 67, 68 or more. Automatically.

Details about both initiatives can be found here.

The pensioner initiative also has no chance for all genders, age groups and language regions.

GFS Bern surveyed 19,105 voters for the SRG survey between February 7 and 14. The statistical margin of error is +/- 2.8 percentage points.
