Now it is official: Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, wants to stay in office for another term. “In these five years, not only my passion for Europe has grown, but of course also my experience of how much this Europe can achieve for its people,” the politician said in Berlin on Monday after her appointment by the CDU.
Von der Leyen recalled that she intuitively said yes five years ago when the question arose whether she could imagine becoming Commission President. Today, five years later, she makes ‘a very conscious and well-considered decision’. “I would like to run for a second term,” she said.
Successful in the Corona pandemic
Von der Leyen cited, among other things, the fight against the economic consequences of the corona pandemic and promoting investments in a clean and digital industry as successes of her first term. “We have aligned Europe with the future and the tasks of the future,” she said.
Von der Leyen was recently nominated by the CDU’s board of directors as the European People’s Party’s (EPP) top candidate for the future presidency of the Commission. The post must be filled after the European elections in June.
As a rule, a candidate from the European party family who performs best in the European elections is appointed. The EPP is clearly at the forefront of research so far. There is therefore a good chance that Von der Leyen can remain president. (SDA)
