The Swiss Lotto Six promises good luck – the record winnings paid out would amount to 50 million francs. The winner’s municipality and canton can also participate in the festivities. Because: You can avoid taxes.

But the tax bailiffs have to worry about these taxes. It happens that after winning the lottery, the lucky ones simply move to a tax-friendly community. Recently in the canton of Solothurn: a municipality lost about 8.4 million francs when a winner left.

This is allowed because invoicing only takes place at the end of the year. This is not good form for former Council of States Roberto Zanetti (69). He has therefore called for a change in the law. Lottery and gambling winnings are now taxed “in the tax residence at the time the winnings are due”.

His proposal is on the agenda for the upcoming spring session. And he has a good chance of being hired. However, the law is not yet clear. The strategic move will certainly remain profitable for a while. Good news for today’s lottery millionaire? Blick compares which cantons and municipalities retain the most lottery winnings.

Law is the cheapest

Surprise: most of it remains in the Jura. With a profit of 50 million, an impressive 40 million francs remains after taxes, as the VZ VermögensZentrum calculated for Blick. This despite the fact that the canton is not a tax haven. VZ expert Markus Stoll explains: “In most cantons, lottery winnings are normally taxed as income.” In the Jura it is different: there, lottery winnings are subject to separate taxation, according to the head of taxes at VermögensZentrum.

If a lucky winner has problems with French, she should consider the well-known tax havens. In the cantons of Zug, Nidwalden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Obwalden, taxes only amount to between 10.8 and 13.3 million francs.

This is also an advantage if someone wants to continue working despite an insured pension provision. Their income would also be heavily taxed in these cantons.

Changing communities is worth it

In the most expensive cantons for lottery winners, the calculation looks very different. In Geneva, a record amount of 22.5 million would be cut off from profits in the municipality of Avully. In Waldenburg BL there would be about 21 million. Up to 20 million francs could also go to the tax authorities in the cantons of Vaud, Ticino and Zurich.

However, changing cantons is not realistic for everyone. According to Stoll, it is important to note that a change of residence would be a major turning point in life: “At best, you lose closeness to family and friends.”

So if a winner does not want to get used to a greater distance from his loved ones in addition to his new wealth, moving within the canton may be an obvious option. Within the canton of Zurich, you could save 3.5 million by moving from Maschwanden to Kilchberg. And: it’s only a 23-minute drive between the two communities.
