This will strengthen the fight against smuggling crime and limit irregular migration. The federal police can continue to make “flexible use of the entire package of stationary and mobile border police measures,” said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
In mid-October, Faeser introduced temporary stationary controls in Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland in response to the sharp increase in the number of refugees. Since then, nearly 23,000 unauthorized entries have been detected and about 13,000 “measures have been taken to prevent entry or terminate your stay,” the ministry said. In addition, 564 smugglers were arrested.
The number of unauthorized entries fell nationally from about 21,000 in September to about 6,700 in January. “Our measures are working,” said Faeser. Without the now announced extension, the checks would have ended in mid-May. According to the ministry, long-standing controls at the German-Austrian border will run until May 11.
